Quick Facts on Domestic Violence

  • Acts of domestic violence occur every 9 seconds in the U.S.
  • 50% of the couples in the U.S. experience some form of abuse in relationship.
  • 25% of the couples in the U.S. experience violence as a common occurrence.
  • 20% of all murders in this country are committed within the family.
  • 42% of these murders are committed by the relationship partner.
  • 40% of teen age girls report knowing someone that has been hit by their boyfriend.
  • Family violence costs the nation $5 billion to $10 billion a year in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters, foster care, and sick leave from work.
  • 13,000 incidences of family violence occur at a women's workplace annually.


Quick Facts on Sexual Assault

  • In 2005, more than a third (36%) of all sexual assault occurred at or in a victim's home.
  • Of female sexual assault victims, 73% were assaulted by someone they knew.
  • Ninety-two percent of rape or sexual assault victims in 2005 were female.
  • In 2005, 38.3% of all rapes and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement.
  • Of the women who knew the offender, 38% were friends or acquaintances of the rapist and 28% were intimate partners.
  • Girls age 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.
  • Victims of sexual assault are:
    3 times more likely to suffer from depression
    6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders
    14 times more likely to abuse alcohol
    26 more times likely to abuse drugs
    4 times more likely to contemplate suicide
  • One out of every six American women have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape)
